Jones Hits Paydirt on Lake Palestine

Anthony Jones of Irving, Texas won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Texas East Division tournament, held July 30th, 2016 on Lake Palestine.

Running out of Villages Resort Marina near Flint, Texas, Anthony caught five mature bass weighing 27.38 pounds. He conquered the field with his limit bag holding four strong kickers, including a solid leader weighing 7.55 pounds. “I decided to go back to a point I knew pretty well,” said Jones. “I didn’t catch anything the first hour or hour and a half of the day. Then the sun came out, and the rest is history.I caught them all on a frog in a 45 minute span.” For the Boater division victory, Jones took home a check for $5,000.

In second for the Boaters, Andrew Y’Barbo of Groveton, Texas only brought in three fish, but that 3-fish bag had a solid weight of 20.64 pounds with a 8.31-pound kicker. “I only caught and had 3 bites all day,” Y’Barbo explained. “It was all throughout the day. This is a new lake to me, and I’m not that familiar with it yet. I caught them using a Stanley football jig on some good brush piles.” He collected $1,158 for the effort.

Dustin Scoggins of Quinlan, Texas took third for the Boaters with five bass weighing 20.36 pounds. “I caught my first keeper on a pop-r,” said Scoggins. “I had it in by 6:30 am. Then later we started running timber, and flipping some timber. I caught a 5-pounder on the last cast of the day to bring my weight up.” He completed a solid day of fishing to earn a check for $772.

Coming in at fourth place was Albert Collins of Nacogdoches, Texas coming in with a solid bag of 17.33 pounds.

Fifth place award was taken by Bill Gift of Lindale, Texas with a total bag weight of 16.17 pounds anchored by a 7.07 pound kicker.

The Big Bass on the Boater side was caught by Dalton Pratt of Terrell, Texas. His fish came in for a weight of 8.46 pounds winning him a Big Bass award check of $520. Pratt caught his big bass using an Abu Garcia reel, which also entitled him to a brand new Revo SX from Abu Garcia. “Let me tell you,” said Pratt. “The co-angler big fish was caught in my boat too. He snagged his, we reeled it in, and took some pictures and were both very excited.  I picked up my rod and on the very next pitch I set the hook on this one!  It was the darndest thing you ever saw. Two fish like that on back to back casts?  Very neat!  It was caught on a Crispy Critter in about 2 ½ feet of water. Thank you for this new reel. I will add it to my collection of the best reels on the market. My boat holds nothing other than Abu’s.”

In the Co-Angler division, Martin Montfort from Corsicana, Texas won first place with three bass weighing 12.70 pounds. He sealed his victory with his 6.99-pound kicker.

“It wasn’t that easy,” stated Montfort. “I caught my big fish just before lunch, and I only had 3 bites all day. I just had to keep them alive.” He pocketed a check for $1,620 as well as an additional $230 check for taking home the big bass award for the Co-Anglers.

Taking second for the Co-Anglers, Lifetime American Bass Anglers Member Jason Geesey of The Colony, Texas brought in a three-bass limit weighing 10.93 pounds. “Well I started off the day with my boater putting us on fish,” reported Geesey. “I fell off his Yeti cooler and tossed out a decent 2-pounder. But, I caught fish on a chatter bait, a crank bait, and a senko. I had a limit of fish, and it was a good day." He collected $539 for the day’s catch.

Eric Pearce of Fort Worth, Texas placed third on the Co-Angler side with three bass weighing 8.84 pounds. “I had three in the boat by 10:30 am,” Said Pearce. “I was throwing a Fluke and caught my big fish using a Carolina Rig. The boater I was with put us on the fish good.  You can’t expect anything more than that. It got hot after lunch, but with a nice breeze it wasn’t too bad of a day.” His catch allowed him to earn $359.

In fourth place among the Co-Anglers, Bennie Anderson of Grand Prairie, Texas brought in three bass weighing 8.20 pounds.

Lynn Roller of Forth Worth, Texas finished in fifth place with three bass at 8.16 pounds.

Slated for October 29th & 30th, the next tournament for this division is the 2-Day Area Championship, which will be held on Lake Texoma out of Highport Marina near Pottsboro, TX. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance to the 2017 Ray Scott Championship, slated for Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, TN in April of 2017.
