Shafer Wins Season Opener On St. Mary’s

Shane Shafer of Lewisburg, Ohio won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Ohio Division tournament held 4/29/2017 on Grand Lake/St. Mary’s.

Running out of West Bank in Celina, Ohio Shane caught five bass weighing 14.43 pounds. He anchored his catch with a bass that weighed 3.16 pounds. For the Boater Division victory, Shafer took home a check for $5000.00.

“I practiced on Friday and had about 11 bites. Today I had probably 12 bites in two different spots. All my fish were caught flipping a jig and a craw” said Shafer.

In second for the boaters, Dave Davenport of Milford, Ohio weighed in a five bass limit weighing 13.48 pounds.  He collected $1000.00 for the effort.

 “I caught my fish today on a crankbait and also flipping” said Davenport. 

Eric Carsten of Reynoldsburg, Ohio took third for the boaters with five bass weighing 13.15 pounds. His limit earned him $650.00  

“I caught 5 fish today but they were better fish. I caught them on a crankbait and a spinnerbait” said Carsten.  

Finishing fourth, Jake Poffenberger of Brookville, Ohio weighed in a five bass limit weighing 12.47 pounds

Rounding out the top five Richard Shafer of Rockford, Ohio weighed in a five bass limit weighing 12.19 pounds.

Clint Gray of Newark, Ohio weighed in the big bass on the boater side. Gray collected $580.00 for a bass that weighed in at 3.75 pounds. Also because Gray caught his fish on an ABU Garcia reel he was presented a new ABU Garcia Revo SX spinning reel valued at $160.00.

For his top 10 finish Kevin Iden of Marion, Ohio won an additional $250.00 for being a Triton Gold member.
 

In the Co-Angler Division, Tim Cukovecki from Dayton, Ohio won with three bass weighing 5.47 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 2.36 pound kicker to pocket a check for $600.00 

“I caught four fish today culling once. I caught all of my fish flipping” Cukovecki said. 

Taking second for the co-anglers, Chad Buzard of Delphos,Ohio weighed in two fish weighing in at 5.46 pounds. He anchored his catch with a bass that weighed in at 2.76 pounds. Buzard collected $300.00 for his catch and an additional $80.00 for having the big bass on the co angler side.  “I caught my fish flipping creature baits” said Buzard.

Placing third on the co angler side was Zachary Harmon of Delphos, Ohio. Harmon weighed in two bass that weighed in at 3.22 pounds. Harmon collected $225.00 for his catch. 

“I caught my fish today flipping a Berkley Chigger craw around wood” said Harmon.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Dan Minor of Norwalk, Ohio weighed in one bass weighing 2.66 pounds. 

Rounding out the top five, Josh Corwin of Alger Ohio weighed in one bass weighing in at 1.39 pounds.


Slated for June 10th 2017 the next divisional tournament will be held on Indian Lake out of Moundwood State Park located in Lakeview Ohio. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2018 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the Red River in Shreveport-Bossier Louisiana in April 2018.
